May 20th is World Bee Day! Bees are essential pollinators that contribute to the diversity and productivity of ecosystems, as well as the production of food crops that feed humans and animals alike.
The Asian honeybee is an important pollinator species that plays a vital role in agriculture and ecosystem services. The draft genome of A. cerana was published using NGS technology in 2015, which was highly fragmented and lacked chromosome-level scaffolding, making it necessary to obtain completer and more accurate genome sequences.
One of BMKGENE’s successful cases, a team of researchers from China and Australia published a new study titled “A Chromosome-Scale Assembly of the Asian Honeybee Apis cerana Genome”. In this study, they present a highly contiguous chromosome-scale assembly of the A. cerana genome using a combination of PacBio long-read sequencing and Hi-C data. The updated assembly is 215.67 Mb in size with a contig N50 of 4.49 Mb, representing a 212-fold improvement over the previous Illumina-based version. The new assembly also had a higher completeness, with 97.6% of the BUSCOs present, compared to only 86.9% in the previous assembly. Researchers conducted more accurate and comprehensive genomic analysis like new gene prediction and structural variations detection, which may have important implications for understanding the biology and evolution of this species.
BMKEGENE possesses extensive experience in high-quality genome assembly and looks forward to providing our services to you.
